The Ministry of Education's ambitious plan for enhancing the educational infrastructure in Grenada took a significant step forward this week with a sod-turning ceremony at the future site of the new Grenada Christian Academy. Situated behind the basketball court adjacent to the Pearls Airstrip, the ceremony heralded the commencement of construction to begin on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Project Overview and Significance
This construction initiative, falling under phase two of the Grenada Education Enhancement Project, is made possible through funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
A contract worth $27.4 million was inked between the Ministry of Education, Kee-Chanona, and Sonrise Construction JV Inc., with architectural designs overseen by Beston Consulting. The new facility initially aims to accommodate 300 students, with plans for potential expansion to accommodate 500 students in the future.

Prime Minister Mitchell expressed gratitude to the previous administration for its role in the project. He emphasized the government's substantial investment in school infrastructure upgrades and the importance of delivering a top-tier facility for Grenada's students and taxpayers.
Project Details and Features
The project encompasses the construction of four three-story buildings comprising classrooms, laboratories for various subjects, office spaces, a sick bay, a cafeteria, and recreational grounds. Notably, provisions have been made for elevator access to ensure inclusivity for individuals with mobility challenges.
Community Reception and Future Plans
The initiative has garnered positive feedback from stakeholders, with parliamentary representative Kate Lewis lauding it as a significant milestone for educational development in St Andrew Northeast.
Principal George anticipated the improved infrastructure, enabling better teaching opportunities and subject offerings.
Minister for Education David Andrew stressed the importance of supporting the academy in its expansion endeavors while also paying tribute to the late missionary Charles Carpenter for his pivotal role in establishing the academy in Pearls.
Investing in Education's Future
Beyond the Grenada Christian Academy, the broader project includes plans to construct St Andrew's Anglican Primary School in Grenville and relocate St David's Catholic Secondary School.
These efforts underscore a commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and ensuring access to quality learning environments.
Construction is slated for completion in 18 months, and a substantial workforce is expected to be employed during peak periods. The project signifies a significant investment in education, promising a brighter future for Grenada's students and communities.
