Happy 108th Birthday to the Grenadines' Own, Judith Mends
Family, friends, supporters, and well-wishers celebrated Grenadian centenarian Judith Mends's 108th birthday this Sunday. The celebration was hosted by Grenadian-born dentist Dr. Joseph Radix, Mrs. Mends's nephew, and his wife, Barbadian-born Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix, at their residence in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Honoring a Remarkable Life
The celebration saw diverse visitors and guests, including New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and his Grenadian-born mother, Patricia Williams. Dr. Radix shared that his aunt was born in Petit Martinique, the smallest of the tri-island states of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique.
Early Life and Community Involvement
Mrs. Mends spent much of her younger years in Carriacou as a business owner, running a general store. Dr. Radix recounted her significant contributions to her community:
She strongly supported her next-door neighbor and former Prime Minister Herbert Blaize.
She taught piano lessons and organized cultural activities.
She spearheaded the construction of a community center in Carriacou.
She has always been a big supporter of the Hillsborough Roman Catholic Church in Carriacou.
Family Ties and Longevity
Mrs. Mends is one of two sisters still alive, the other being Christina Roberts, another centenarian at 101, who resides in St. George's, the Grenadian capital. Dr. Radix expressed his deep admiration and love for his aunt, describing her as "no nonsense, yet very compassionate" and a true matriarch who leads by example.
A Family's Love and Admiration
During the celebration, Mrs. Mends expressed that she felt "loved and wanted." Another nephew, Dr. Eugene Stanislaus, son of the late Dr. Lamuel Stanislaus, former Grenada Ambassador to the United Nations, spoke about the close bond between his dad and Aunt Judith. Lawyer Jovia Radix-Seaborough, the eldest daughter of Dr. Radix and Justice Hinds-Radix, highlighted the family's blessing of still having "Auntie Judith" in their lives, sharing her "pearls of wisdom."
A Remarkable Memory and Community Spirit
Despite her age, Mrs. Mends remains fully cognizant and possesses a fantastic memory. She can recite phone numbers without assistance. She remains actively involved with her church in Carriacou, continually asking for contributions to support her church and community.
Petit Martinique: Judith Mends's Birthplace
Situated east of the northern half of Carriacou, Petit Martinique is a 586-acre island that completes the tri-island destination. Home to approximately 900 residents, the island's economy relies on boat building and fishing. Petit Martinique, pronounced Pitty-Mar-Ti-Neek, is perfect for relaxing, exploring, and immersing in the local culture.
