How Cruise Ships are Helping Reduce Food Waste

Royal Caribbean Group is charting a course toward sustainability with its latest innovations set to revolutionize waste management at sea. Embracing cutting-edge technology, the cruise company is poised to unveil groundbreaking initiatives aboard its newest ships, promising a greener voyage for passengers while safeguarding the environment.

Converting Solid Waste to Energy

Scheduled for debut this year on Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas and Silversea Cruises' Silver Nova, pioneering waste-to-energy systems mark a significant leap forward for the industry.

These systems, namely Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis (MAP) and Micro Auto Gasification (MAG), will redefine onboard waste management by converting solid waste into synthesis gas (syngas), serving as a sustainable energy source for the vessels.

By harnessing waste as a renewable resource, Royal Caribbean Group aims to minimize its ecological footprint while enhancing the onboard experience for travelers.

Furthermore, the company's commitment extends beyond energy generation to address food waste comprehensively. With a target to slash food waste across its fleet by 50% by 2025, Royal Caribbean Group is leveraging technology and operational strategies to optimize food production and minimize excess.

Inventory Management on Board

Through a proprietary platform and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, the company intends to streamline inventory management and adjust food production in real time, ensuring efficient utilization of resources while maintaining culinary excellence.

Royal Caribbean Group is bolstering its Green Hubs program, an initiative aimed at fostering responsible waste management in port destinations.

By partnering with local vendors and implementing best practices, the program has achieved remarkable success, diverting 92% of waste from landfills. Including the Galapagos Islands in this initiative underscores the company's commitment to preserving fragile ecosystems and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

As a stalwart champion of environmental stewardship, Royal Caribbean Group continues to push the boundaries of innovation, reaffirming its dedication to shaping a more sustainable future for the cruising industry.

With a steadfast commitment to excellence and responsible practices, the company remains at the forefront of sustainable tourism, setting a compelling example for the maritime sector and beyond.
