Trinidad and Tobago provides a stark contrast. Since it relies on its own reserves, it has a cost of $0.05/0.06 per kWh. Furthermore, it counts on government subsidies; that’s why its costs are even lower than in Russia, the EAU, or China, which also rely on their own production.


Distance and Logistics: The Long Way Around


The following factors are distance and remoteness, which make shipping harder and more expensive. Crude must be shipped first, then sent again for processing and finally brought back as ready-to-use oil. These numerous steps require money that ends up hefting the citizens’ bills, and islands like Bermuda, which is the most distant one, end up having some of the highest electricity costs (0.5 kWh).


The Scale Challenge: Small Populations and High Fixed Costs


Smaller populations mean many Caribbean nations cannot spread electricity costs across as many customers as mainland power grids can. Utility companies in the islands must build, maintain, and operate entire power systems while serving relatively few customers. For example, St. Kitts and Nevis has just 47,000 residents, Curaçao has roughly 150,000, and Jamaica has only 2.8 million. By contrast, a single city like New York services over 8 million people on one unified grid. This makes infrastructure costs

significantly cheaper per person.


Warm Weather: High Strain to Satisfy Ongoing Cooling Needs


The panorama doesn't look any better when we consider the cooling needs during a typical, hot, tropical day. While other regions also suffer from high temperatures, they also have the four seasons, which bring relief during the milder months. This is rarely the case in the Caribbean, where year-round temperatures average between 81°F and 86°F (27 to 30 Celsius). Coupled with average relative humidity levels around 80%, air conditioning systems must run constantly, working overtime to remove moisture from the air while cooling homes.


The Real Cost of Going Solar and Is It Worth It?


Many people assume renewable energy is financially out of reach. This misconception stems from viewing it as an expense rather than a long-term investment. While initial installation costs typically range between $8,000 and $25,000, high local power rates allow these systems to pay for themselves in just a few years. This unlocks up to two decades of drastically reduced electricity bills.


Specialists stipulate that, in a place like the Cayman Islands, where solar panels can be imported duty-free, homeowners can reduce their electricity bill by 60% to 90%, which equals $4,000 to $9,000 in annual savings. Payback time depends on the local costs. Here, in Cayman, the investment can be recovered in 5 to 8 years.


How Government Support Plays a Key Role


Accessing government benefits can help reduce the investment, and finding incentives is not that far-fetched now that governments are actively launching related programs.


The BVI's Zero-duty Window for Renewables


The British Virgin Islands has set an ambitious goal of generating 60% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. To support this goal, the government introduced duty and tax exemptions on a wide range of renewable energy and energy-efficient products, including solar panels, solar water heaters, energy-efficient air conditioners, and LED light bulbs. Originally launched in 2021, these tax incentives have been extended through 2030 to encourage widespread adoption.


Puerto Rico Pays You for the Energy You Produce


In Puerto Rico, they don't just make your installation more affordable; you can actually earn money from the power you generate through Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs.

Homeowners who install qualifying battery storage systems become eligible to earn $1.00 per kWh when their systems release excess energy back to the grid during peak

demand.


Government grants and relief funds offer up to 100% coverage for vulnerable households, though extremely high demand has resulted in long waiting lists and lottery-based allocations.


Buyers can enjoy an immediate 11.5% savings via a local sales tax (IVU) exemption on solar equipment. Furthermore, the 30% US Federal Tax Credit applies to residents who

owe federal income tax, such as federal employees, remote workers earning US-sourced income, or those with mainland tax liabilities.


Antigua and Barbuda Bet on Resilience


There are many ways to support renewable energy; one of them is the creation of new facilities and enhancement of existing ones. In Antigua, which set a goal to achieve 86%

renewable energy by 2030, they built a hurricane-resistant hybrid plant, whose capacity can be expanded when demand increases.

These can include green industrialization initiatives, infrastructure works, and on-grid and off-grid renewable power generation.
